This painting mimics the use of a camera. Parts of the flower is in focus but behind that it is out of focus.
This blurred part of the image is made by having the oil paint applied and then blurring it all with a few brush strokes going in the up, sideways and down direction in an ordered pattern. Each colour has to be planned out so this can be quickly achieved.
I've used this technique in my painting. As the first painting I had painted was from a photo that had blurred parts to it. I used this technique to start painting.
